What We Know

On Thursday, our last day of class (before our final day at the BEACH!), we finally wrote Truth poems to contrast with our poems full of lies. We based them on Ballade by Francois Villon, which uses the repetitive phrase I know... The students took this idea and ran with it. I am missing three poems, as several of the girls decided to read their poems on the open mic we held last night.

Zinnia S. read about Skunk Princesses and Dainty Ladies.

I know everything but you
by Tess D.

I know cats and string
I know shoes and laces
I know pencil and paper
I know toothbrush and toothpaste.
I know everything but you.

I know bed and blanket
I know feathers and birds
I know petals and flowers
I know one and two
I know everything but you

I know mouse and cat
I know spoon and fork
I know flap and fly
I know eat and starve
I know everything but you.

Grace J. kicks some funny poems, including a line about a "zesty mango"!

I Know But I Don’t
by Maddie L.

I know the rich from the poor,
I know the homeless from their cup,
I know the dog from his master,
I know the stereo from the microphone,
I know sparkle from glitter,
I know but I don’t.

I know love from hate,
I know Shakespeare alone,
I know me from you,
I know mule from horse,
I know gerbil from hamster,
I know but I don’t.

I know a dog from a cat,
I know a girl from a boy,
I know myself –
I know but I don’t.

I Know Not
by Grace F.

I know my friend has black hair.
I know the cats by their fur.
I know the Mountain Lion by his scratchy fur.
I know the cougar by her spots.
I know about everything but fish.

I know the poisonous viper.
I know dandelions from clover.
I know brown from blue.
I know about everything but fish.

I know about sports.
I know about jeans.
I know about everything but fish.

I Know
by Allison N.

I know cats and catnip.
I know how to have confidence.
I know how to do math and how to read.
I know good from bad.
I know everything but how nothing happens.

I know the clock and how it ticks.
I know a paintbrush and paper.
I know what to hate from what to love.
I know Abraham Lincoln and his life.
I know everything but how nothing happens.

I know what to do.
I know leaves and trees.
I know birthstones of August.
I know everything but how nothing happens.

We have had a wonderful month together -- writing, playing games, and jumping rope. Thanks to all the parents again for sharing their amazing daughters with me!! Have a great rest of your summer -- Cassie
